Patient care technicians provide daily care for patients, typically working under the supervision of a nurse or care team. Their goal is to help patients feel comfortable in what are often uncomfortable situations.
They may take sample collections for lab work, for example. They also take and record vital signs. A patient care tech is also responsible for ensuring patients meet appointments for testing and exercise each day.
What is a patient care technician specifically, though? Ultimately, a patient care technician provides emotional support and performs medical duties at the same time. They are there to help their patients with daily activities such as meals.
Patient care technicians can work in any healthcare environment, including home healthcare. You might work in a clinic, hospital, long-term care facility, or emergency room.
Phlebotomy Career Training(PCT) offers an affordable Patient Care Technician Certification course that can get you started on a healthcare career path. Patient care technician is sometimes a prerequisite course for pre-health students hoping to go on to nursing or medical school. It is also a fulfilling standalone career option.
There are two options available for those looking to take the Patient Care Technician certification course. Each is for those with at least six months of experience in a healthcare profession, including certified nursing assistant, home health aide, or direct care worker. To qualify, you must prove prior experience and have a high school diploma or GED.
PCT offers a course you can take 100% online and is designed to work with your busy schedule. The online training modules are available to you 24\7 on either a computer or a mobile device. You can complete the course in as little as four weeks or take up to six months from the time of your enrollment to finish.
There is a total of 72 hours of coursework in this program covering topics such as HIPPA regulations, taking vital signs, and infection control. Once you sign up for the course, PCT makes an instructor available to answer any questions.
After completing all the modules and passing the exams, you must satisfy clinicals in patient assessment, ECG, and phlebotomy. Students must arrange their own local internship.
You must also pass a national exam by the National Healthcareer Association or the American Medical Certification Association (AMCA).
